Marriage! Marriage! Marriage!

Right. Now that I firmly have your attention, my nuptials to an amazing woman were perhaps the reason I completely missed the entire furore over Posterous shutting down. Well, I suppose that is always the risk of free services – they don’t owe you ANYTHING. Yes. Twitter. Facebook. Gmail. All FREE services. That, if the numbers don’t work out for some reason or another, have the right to go gentle into that good night.

Now, this storm in a teacup might otherwise have passed me by, except for one important fact. Hishamwyne.com, my primary domain, was pointing at my Posterous blog, which in turn housed all my work published over the past few years. Suddenly, there was a wee bit of urgency around, given that I had chosen to stumble onto Posterous’ incipient demise mere days before it would violently vanish.

It was a matter of minutes to convince Posterous to regurgitate an XML backup – at least they’ve been good that way. In a couple more of those minutes, that XML moved all my words over to an existing wordpress blog.

Then I ran face-first into a bit of a snag. All my data might be safe, but hishamwyne.com still had to be told to change its mind and point to wordpress.com. This was a bit of a feat of impossible derring do at first, not least because there’s a stupendous amount of material out there to do with wordpress – moving to a wordpress.org blog, moving to a self-hosted domain, making an omelette without breaking eggs, convincing helium it is in fact a potato and not a gas lighter than air, bringing back Charlie Chaplin through a spot of necromancy, etc.

But eventually truth dawned. All that was required was to point those pesky Godaddy domain nameservers to wordpress. And then give wordpress a few grammes of flesh by paying for a domain mapping upgrade. And voila! This is the new landing page for hishamwyne.com.

WordPress saves the day. Image above gratuitously stolen from Google search results. And the great migration actually turned into a rapid exercise in respraying signposts on the Interwebs.

Left to Right – Yousef Tuqan, me, Meredith Tuqan, Rabih Altair

Friday was the day where we rose grumpily, eyelids complaining at being forced open and knees knocking together, to run the Dubai Creek Relay. Organized by the Dubai Creek Hash House Harriers, the Feb 1st run was the 19th time and 19th year people have trundled up and down the creek. Quite the tradition.

The Creek Hash House Harriers describe themselves as “a drinking club with a running problem” – an apt characterization. And the club’s full of colourful characters, with nom de plumes like “Legs Akimbo”, “Arsehole”, “Compressed fart” and my two particular favourites – “Pedo Pan” and “Tranny Granny”.

The idea of ‘hashing’ is interesting. Near as I can figure it, with a bit of help from erstwhile running partner Yousef Tuqan, it’s a Brit military term that roughly indicates examining, investigating, and sorting out on the rough and ready. The Hasher run then doesn’t offer you the tarmacked creature comforts of, say, the Dubai Marathon. In fact, my first leg was through soft sand and construction. The utter joy!

We ran as the Angry Pirates – a term that has an etymology best looked up here.

Our team members for the day: Angry Pirates founder Yousef Tuqan, Meredith Tuqan, Rabih Altair and yours truly.

We kicked off w/ a briefing at the Boardwalk, Dubai Creek. The relay proper kicked off at the head of the Creek opposite the old Country Club and passed by the Flamingo Sanctuary following the edge of the water. The first changeover point was near the canal. Meredith ran our first leg, and took off like a bat out of hell.

The second leg followed the canal through and then eventually hit Al Jadaf Shipyard. Meredith passed me the baton, and I set off, with feet sinking into soft sand instantly. I tried chasing down the leader, but to little avail. Did shorten the gap a bit though.

Meredith ‘vined’ me coming in:

@hishamwyne in a photo finish, leg 1 #creekrelay #dubai #ftw vine.co/v/b1qzjYmddhj

— Meredith Tuqan (@meredithtuqan) February 1, 2013

And so it continued.

Leg three, ran by Rabih, proceeded through the old fishing village before the first crossing at Business Bay Bridge finishing at the Honda Showroom. Then, it was Yousef going under the Garhoud bridge, along past the golf club, before the second crossing at the Maktoum Bridge near the Dubai Law Courts. From there, it was to the Shindaga Tunnel -Meredith again.

At the Shindaga, I took the baton again, chasing down this man.

It was all going according to plan. I love the old Dhow Wharfage area, and was running on concrete. And then, I got a bit lost near the changeover point at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce. I saw the leader’s head bobbing through some bushes, and took shortcuts through foliage to wind up pretty much neck in neck.

Rabih then ran from there to the golf club, crossing the Floating bridge to Wonderland. There, Yousef took the final leg and brought it home for us at the Dubai Creek. Here he is:

@youseftuqan brings it home! 40km in 3:16!Team effort @hishamwyne & @rabiht & me #creekrelay #Dubai vine.co/v/b1bhKZu7pgz

— Meredith Tuqan (@meredithtuqan) February 1, 2013

Brilliant day, and a gorgeous run with good friends. We came in at 3:16, which as Joe Akkawi said, makes us Jesus. Well short of our estimated time of 4 hours.

This running shtick isn’t half bad, ya know. Time to strap on those running shoes and hit rain-swept Dubai for a bit.

I was researching the origins of this succinct way of describing the incredible self-satisfied twats men make of themselves when holding forth to the opposite gender. This is what the urban dictionary says about mansplaining:

“To explain in a patronizing manner, assuming total ignorance on the part of those listening. The mansplainer is often shocked and hurt when their mansplanation is not taken as absolute fact, criticized or even rejected altogether. “

And digging further back, this delightful piece by Rebecca Solnit was wot started it all.

Men Who Explain Things

“He cut me off soon after I mentioned Muybridge. “And have you heard about the very important Muybridge book that came out this year?”

So caught up was I in my assigned role as ingenue that I was perfectly willing to entertain the possibility that another book on the same subject had come out simultaneously and I’d somehow missed it. He was already telling me about the very important book — with that smug look I know so well in a man holding forth, eyes fixed on the fuzzy far horizon of his own authority.

…

So, Mr. Very Important was going on smugly about this book I should have known when Sallie interrupted him to say, “That’s her book.” Or tried to interrupt him anyway.”

Written for Read, the metro magazine just after 2013 thwacked us in the head.

Bulging with festivity

The festive season has drawn to a groaning close, straining livers, wallets and shirt buttons. As everyone starts the year with good intentions, and the gyms are full of dedicated athletes who will last at least the week, every mind burns with a singular question. How best to hide that annoying festive bulge and those holiday love handles?

You might take recourse to the standard black t-shirt in a larger size. Black is slimming and can trim a silhouette when paired with dark jeans.

But what about those who can't run around in black tees all day, and actually need to dress up? The logical inclination is to go buy a couple of large shirts, and wrap them sack-like around a torso that mightn't be as svelte as it was a month back.

But here lies the ugly rub. If the buttons are straining apart, by all means by a slightly larger shirt to tide yourself over for a few weeks. But don't fall into the pitfall of thinking a completely oversized shirt will hide your fall from physical grace. Work shirts are generally light coloured, and a large slab of white material that flaps around when tucked in will make one look bigger, not the other way around. And please avoid all temptation to leave a dress shirt untucked. Their hems and length are designed for fitting into trousers. Leaving them swinging in the wind will just make you look unkempt as well as unfit. Best of luck sticking to those resolutions for at least a week!

The Write Stuff

Note: This article was written for Bespoke, and has been edited. Not sure how I feel about the edits.

Makers of luxury writing instruments, Montblanc, have developed a state-of-the-art bespoke nib programme that enhances the way we write the old-fashioned way.

Handwriting is a very personal thing. So linked to individuality is it that graphologists claim to be able to comment on the character and motivation of a writer from mere scraps of writing. Whether one believes in graphology or not, handwriting is beautifully idiosyncratic. It breathes life into otherwise static notes and lays bare the innermost thoughts of the writer with every correction, crossed out word or hesitant doodle for the reader to dissect. The process of creation with a pen is transparent, vulnerable and incalculably richer than the polished articles word processors produce.

But handwriting is a dying art. Elegant cursive is no longer being taught. With keyboards and touchscreens replacing pen and paper, we are forgetting how to write. Taking notes with a pen, even a ballpoint pen, is an eccentricity. Yet even in the harried rush of contemporary life, hearts still yearn for yore.

Montblanc, maker of fine-writing instruments, recognises that pens are no longer ubiquitous. But it also understands that beyond the eccentric advocates, there are those eager to try the fountain pen, if only it could be made personal. People who don’t want just any pen, but a tailored expression of self that delivers stellar performance every time. And so, Montblanc has introduced a bespoke programme.

Creating a nib tailored to a writer’s individual writing style seems almost an unnecessary luxury at first because Montblanc already offers an array of eight – from extra fine to double bold – along with the option of the oblique slant, depending on whether one is left or right-handed.

For instance, the knowledgeable manager at Montblanc’s Dubai boutique only had to cast a cursory look at my old MB140 medium nib that had been shaped by my southpaw overhead ‘hook’ to tell me that I should have bought a bold left oblique nib to begin with. His analysis was correct – a new left oblique nib felt as natural to me as the one I had honed.

But the bespoke nib programme takes Montblanc’s attention to such detail even further. Customers write on a slate with a sensor pen. Software then captures an array of measurements – from the pressure exerted on the pen and rotation of the nib, to the angle of attack and sway of the wrist – and delivers a detailed writing analysis.

This can then be used to select a nib from Montblanc’s portfolio. Should the enthusiast want something bespoke, the details are sent to a master craftsman in Hamburg, who creates a customised nib that can be engraved with your name. At 1,500 USD a pop, it isn’t exactly cheap but for your outlay, you get the ultimate expression of individuality, a truly personal nib capable of matching your every curve, dash, umlaut and ellipsis.

In the heart of Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, the Rayana Spa draws from natural elements to create an holistic, personalised route to supreme well-being.

It was with a mix of trepidation and excitement that I made my way along the twisting roads around the Hyatt Capital Gate to my appointment at the Rayana Spa. I must confess that a trip to a spa is hardly an average experience for me. All these years, I have resisted the urge to be pampered and thumped into relaxation by another – think of it as the male cliché of self-sufficiency. Consequently this was, if you like, my First Time.

But then the Rayana Spa offers the kind of treatment that’s difficult to resist. Clocking in at two and a half hours of attention, the Rayana Rebuild was certainly not going to be a quick in-and-out. But then, as I told myself, in the line of duty, a journalist must be prepared to run the gauntlet. Even if that’s of pampering and indulgence.

The Capital Gate Hyatt tower is one of the more recognisable structures in Abu Dhabi. At 18 degrees off the vertical, it’s considered to be the farthest leaning manmade structure in the world. Due to deliberate asymmetry, each room is different in curvature, which of course means that furniture and fittings must be custom-made.

The Rayana Spa has taken advantage of these architectural idiosyncrasies to create a relaxing space within a busy setting. It pays homage to its desert environs by focusing on the interplay between sun, water, sand and botanical ingredients. Buzzwords, I initially thought. But no.

The spa’s layout creates myriad opportunities for the sun to shine through crevices, windows and portholes. The entire ensemble prioritises a connection with the outside, albeit through panes of glass. With captivating views and no chance missed to let in the sun, the overall effect is that of airy lightness. The walls and finish also pay tribute to the desert, with earthy tones and acid-eaten marble as the dominant motif.

The Rayana Rebuild is extensive and strangely relaxing, even for a sceptic such as I. A personal therapist led me through a warm bath where, to my chagrin, I could only handle a lukewarm thirty-eight degrees Celsius. This was followed by a stunningly soporific deep tissue massage lasting ninety minutes. The Rebuild culminates in a facial treatment, which is probably more effective on people who don’t have hair shrouding most of their face.

There is no shortage of spas in the UAE but the Rayana is set apart by its attention to detail, the interplay of sun, sand and water and the extreme care with which treatments are chosen based on your needs. Were I ever to subject myself to a spa again, I can honestly say that this would be the one.

Written for Shawati. Image gratuitously nicked off Google.

There are times when an author, embellishing his character with the very last details of attire and circumstance, takes recourse to singularly recognizable props. In modern fiction, the Ferrari heralds the ostentatious playboy, an Aston Martin the refined older gentleman, and the Audi R8 a young millionaire wanting refined thrills. Horological instruments, of course, remain a crucial prop to pin onto characters.

Take for example a line by French author Alexandre Dumas in his masterful novel “The Count of Monte Cristo”. “Danglars’ watch, a masterpiece by Breguet which he had rewound with care before setting out the previous day, chimed half past five in the morning. ”

Even out of context, that sentence compels the reader to make deductions – that Danglars enjoys the finer things in life, has taught himself refined if not extravagant tastes, and seems to value punctuality. In this surmise, the reader may eventually be proved correct – for Danglars is a millionaire banker who has made a fortune through illegal transactions in the French army. Putting aside his initial perfidy in framing the novel’s protagonist as a Napoleonite, or the shady ways in which he sought his gains, Dumas has managed to express much about his villain by making reference to that bastion of horological tradition – Breguet.

The story of the house of Breguet starts with one man – A.-L. Breguet. Born in Neuchâtel in 1747, but based in Paris, his career as watchmaker is marked with repeated breakthroughs in the art of horology. His inventions were as decisive to horology as they were varied. His career started with a series of breakthroughs: the development of the successful self-winding perpétuelle watches, the introduction of gongs for repeating watches and the first shock-protection for balance pivots. His work with escapements also resulted in the eponymous Breguet spring, an overcoil that rectified some of the deficiencies in the springs used at the time.

There is no argument over Breguet’s seminal influence on watchmaking. But serious followers of the horological arts have often given thought to whether Breguet really invented all that is often credited to him. For instance, popular culture has him invent the balance spring – but the technology was in use when he started working on watches.

The confusion in attributions arises not from some artifice, or clever marketing. It stems from the basic fact that the advancement of machinery and technology is usually never as simple as history books might narrate. James Watt may be credited with the steam engine, but he did not wink it into existence. A host of artisans and technology enthusiasts were simultaneously working on the technology. However, Watt did offer improvements to the technology in ways that rendered the engine effective and useful, where prior it had perhaps been an inefficient curio. While he may not have invented the technology, he had certainly nurtured it to the point that offered useful economic and social contributions.

So it was with A.-L. Breguet. Heavy disks in timepieces were replaced with hollowed out masses, bridges were constructed, and springs were created so as to have consistent centres of gravity. He might not have invented the basics of watchmaking technology, but perfect it he certainly did. He was a genius, and one of the pioneers of very high quality watchmaking with mechanics that would not be out of place in the masterpieces of today.

It was A.-L. Breguet who invented the tourbillion, a horological complication that has since become the calling card of masterful watchmaking. A tourbillion is essentially a watch mechanism within a watch mechanism, with a balance and escapement enclosed in a revolving cage. The inspiration behind it was Breguet’s concern that changes in gravitational force due to the inclination of the watch – from horizontal to vertical – would result in inaccuracies. In his patent application, he noted, “By means of this invention, I have succeeded in cancelling through compensation the anomalies caused by the different positions of the centres of gravity of the regulator movements, to distribute frictions on all parts of the circumference of this regulator’s pivots and of the holes in which these pivots move.” The idea was to average out deviations caused by differences in position to allow for chronometer-like accuracy.

Whether a toubillion is strictly useful is an interesting if distracting argument in modern horology. The concept was sound, except that for wrists watches the movement of the wearer’s hand averages out deviations in position regardless. The tourbillion was perhaps of greater use for pocket watches, held vertically in a jacket or waistcoat for elongated periods of time. Nevertheless, the original raison de etre for the tourbillion is a moot point. Modern materials and techniques might have lessened its mathematical significance, but even in the era of machine design, it is one of the most delicate and precise complications to successfully implement and remains revered for its beauty and complexity.

Every master craftsman leaves signature traits on his work. So it was with A.-L. Breguet. His creations, and those of the house he inspired, can be told apart via characteristics such as delicate guilloché work, blued-steel hollowed out apple-tip watch hands introduced in 1783, and fluting on the caseband.

Breguet’s masterful designs and engineering were quickly embraced by the nobility of the time, and also became ingrained in the aspirations of the bourgeoisie. In April 1798, a few weeks before he left for Egypt, General Bonaparte acquired three timepieces from Breguet: a repeating watch, a repeating carriage clock with a calendar, and a self-winding perpétuelle repeating watch. The future emperor’s family also became Breguet’s clients. Queen Marie-Antoinette was also given a self-winding perpétuelle repeater with a date indication invented, perfected and completed by Breguet for her in October 1782.

In more recent history, Sir Winston Churchill was a regular client at Breguet, sometimes to buy a watch, but more often to have the watch he wore all his life attended to. His watch, Breguet number 765, an exceptional minute-repeater with split-seconds chronograph, was bought by his grandfather, the Duke of Marlborough, in 1890. King Fuad I of Egypt, Arthur Rubinstein Ettore Bugatti, Sergei Rachmaninov, Prince George of Greece (1934) and The Duke of Windsor (1950) have offered the house of Breguet their custom.

There is no denying the provenance of the house of Breguet, or its influence in the world of horology. But purists cast an alarmed glance at the house’s buyout by the Swatch Group – a brand that was once best known for playful watches with Disney characters. Horologists have a penchant for independent watchmaking houses, and were concerned that involvement from the corporate world would dilute the Breguet line.

They need not have worried. The connoisseur gossip lines indicate that two houses under the Swatch umbrella – Breguet and Glashütte Original – have retained the expressive freedom through fine watchmaking that is a hallmark of independent houses.

In fact, Swatch is very keen to dispel notions that the Group is interfering in Breguet’s legacy since the house became part of the Group in September 1999 under the watchful eye of Swiss-Lebanese-American entrepreneur and Swatch Group founder Nicolas G. Hayek. On the contrary, says Swatch, efforts are being made to expand the house’s operations through substantial investment.

Swatch’s spokespeople note that, “The Swatch Group has confirmed its intention of endowing Breguet with an emotional dimension as well as making available even more considerable means and resources.” They point to the fact that substantial investments have been made in the Vallée de Joux, where the manufacturing facility is based, not only to maintain Breguet’s tradition of simplicity and high technology, but also extend it. The new Manufacture Breguet opened in 2003, and a first extension of the building was made in 2006.

Simultaneously, the Swatch group says that it has made investing in equipment, sophisticated machine tools and the recruitment of highly trained watchmakers a priority to cope with steadily growing demand. New infrastructure and sophisticated machine tools coupled with the recruitment of highly trained and experienced watchmakers enables Breguet to cope with steadily growing demand. Swatch has launched another manufacturing extension project expected to complete in 2013.

The contemporary line of Breguet watches diverge in form and function while paying homage to traditional design cues. The Classique wristwatches, for instance, exemplify the watchmaking ideals of precision, clarity and elegant lines. Whether extra-thin models with manually wound or automatic movements, or complicated watches, they are perhaps closest to the technical principles, artistry and traditional values of the classic Breguet watch of old.

The Marine line of watches tend to embrace comfort and practicality, and take cues from A.-L. Breguet’s role as chronometer maker to the French navy, while the Type XX borrow cues from the 1950s models designed for the French naval air arm. While interesting, these models seem to want to appeal more to the laid-back executive indulging his sporty, man of action side. Sporty watches have risen in popularity over the years, and Breguet is catering to the market. Then there are the Héritage models, which depart from Breguet’s classic round cases in favour of curved tonneau ones. Breguet also carries the Reine De Naples line for women, paying tribute to prominent female figures in history that have offered the house patronage – Queen Marie-Antoinette of France, the Marquise de Condorcet and Empress Josephine among them.

The Tradition line consists of Breguet’s more upmarket offerings, melding traditional design cues with horological complications that salute A.-L. Breguet’s mechanical precision and innovations.

Though times do change, and with it the mores of design and technology, Breguet under the Swatch Group has maintained more than enough of the semiotics and hallmarks of its designer, inventor and founder to keep its timepieces authentic, and even sublime.

This appeared, in some toned-down subdued fashion, in the Read metro newspaper.

The fashion subculture one feels the sorriest for is the young emo crowd. Emo culture was considered cool, once upon the days of yore. The angst, the black. The emaciation. The moroseness, the monosyllabic responses. Sad confessional rock. The great Nietzschian debate as to the purpose of anything.

And then electronic gadgets came and killed the emo star. It was the worst possible demise, because emo went mainstream, defeating its very raison de etre.

Now we all sit around, hunched into little gargoyles of miserly. Except we’re not really contemplating confessions or the availability of the nearest razor, but rather furiously propelling little birds towards porcine creatures on our phones. All conversations are by default a syllable long, due not to angst but short attention spans. Between Watsapp, BBM, Facebook and twitter, our mouths cease functioning save for guttural noises while the fingers twiddle furiously.

But what about the black attire, you say? And the anorexic skinniness? The latter has been appropriated by the army of hipsters inexorably inching its way up Sheikh Zayed Road, while the former has become the reserve of savvy single people who’ve realized it reduces laundry bills. It is far easier to sort loads when every single article is black. Utterly practical, though there is the issue of heat retention in the midday sun.

Video might have accounted for the radio star, and Youtube might have replaced the video star. But the demise, or rather universal dilution, of the emo star, has been the unkindest cut of them all.
